Walking into a jiu-jitsu gym for the first time can feel intimidating. Everyone seems to know what they're doing, and you might not even know what to call half of it. The good news: every black belt you'll ever meet had a first class too. Here's what your first Brazilian jiu-jitsu class at Glory actually looks like.
Pick the right class
Glory runs three kinds of adult BJJ classes, and all of them welcome beginners:
- Fundamental BJJ focuses on the core positions and movements every new student needs.
- No-Gi BJJ is trained in athletic clothes like shorts and a rash guard.
- Gi BJJ is trained in the traditional uniform, the gi.

How a class usually flows
Most BJJ classes follow a similar rhythm: a warm-up with movements you'll use on the mat, technique instruction where the coach demonstrates and you practice with a partner, and then live training (often called "rolling") where you put it to work. As a beginner, you'll be paired with people who help you learn, and you can always sit out a round and watch. Nobody expects you to know anything on day one.
What to bring
Comfortable athletic clothes you can move in, a water bottle, and flip-flops or sandals for walking off the mat are a good start. Trim your fingernails and toenails and skip jewelry, which keeps you and your partners safe. If you're trying a Gi class and don't own a gi, give us a call at 816-524-7463 before you come so we can help you sort it out.
Tips for your first few weeks
- Show up early so you can meet the coach and ask questions.
- Tap early and often. Tapping is how you tell your partner to stop. It's part of learning, not losing.
- Don't worry about fitness first. BJJ builds your conditioning; you don't need to get in shape before you start.
- Keep coming back. Consistency beats intensity. Two classes a week adds up fast.
