BJJ vs. MMA: Which Should a Beginner Start With?

If you're thinking about starting martial arts in Lee's Summit, you've probably narrowed it down to two options: Brazilian jiu-jitsu or mixed martial arts. Both are great for fitness, confidence and self-defense. Here's how they compare, so you can pick a starting point.

What is Brazilian jiu-jitsu?

Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling art. There's no punching or kicking. You learn takedowns, positions, and submissions like chokes and joint locks, using leverage so technique beats size and strength. At Glory you can train Gi BJJ in the traditional uniform, No-Gi BJJ in athletic clothes, or Fundamental BJJ on Saturday mornings.

What is MMA?

Mixed martial arts (MMA) combines striking (punches, kicks, knees and elbows) with wrestling and ground grappling. It's the most complete version of martial arts for self-defense. Glory's MMA program includes MMA classes, MMA Striking and a Saturday open mat, and it's for everyday people, not just fighters.

Choose BJJ if...

  • You like solving puzzles and learning step by step.
  • You'd rather not get hit while you learn.
  • You want morning class options. Glory offers daytime No-Gi BJJ.

Choose MMA if...

  • You want to learn to handle yourself standing up and on the ground.
  • You want a workout with lots of variety.
  • You've watched fights and want to learn how it's done, the right way.

You don't have to pick just one

Plenty of members train both. BJJ makes your ground game in MMA better, and MMA striking rounds out your jiu-jitsu. If you like hitting pads mostly for the workout, check out kickboxing and GloryFit too.
