One of the most common questions we hear from Lee's Summit parents is "Is my child old enough?" There's no single perfect age. It depends on your child. But there are a few signs that tell you they're ready, and at Glory we build classes around age groups so kids learn alongside peers at a similar stage.
How Glory groups kids by age
- Kids BJJ, ages 4–7: short, high-energy classes built around movement, balance and listening. At this age the goal is fun, coordination and learning how to follow instructions in a group.
- Youth BJJ, ages 8–14: more technique, with leverage and positions that let smaller kids hold their own, so size and strength don't decide the outcome.
- Youth Kickboxing, ages 8–14: balance, coordination and striking fundamentals through drills.
All three run after school. Call 816-524-7463 for current class times.
Signs your child is ready
- They can follow simple two- or three-step directions from an adult who isn't a parent.
- They can stay engaged in a group activity for about half an hour.
- They're curious. Maybe they wrestle with siblings, love to climb, or keep asking about karate from a cartoon.
- You're looking for something that builds confidence, focus or respect, not just burns energy.
If your child is shy or has never done a team activity, that's not a reason to wait. Many kids who start out quiet find their confidence on the mat. Classes are built so no student feels overwhelmed or intimidated.
Is it ever too late?
No. Kids who start at 10, 12 or 14 do great, and the 8–14 youth classes are designed for students with no prior experience. Older kids often pick up technique quickly because they can focus longer.
Why jiu-jitsu and kickboxing for kids?
Our kids martial arts program focuses on perseverance, respect, discipline, leadership and teamwork, plus real self-defense based on leverage instead of size. Kids also earn progress one class at a time, which gives them a real sense of accomplishment.
